Evan and I made a trip to the audi’s office to get new tubing for his current ear molds, fitted for new ear molds and to turn in his hearing aids to get them clean/refurbished before he starts kindergarten in August. I knew he would be without his aids for almost 2 weeks so that is why we went early. I hadn’t informed the audi’s office when I made the appointment about sending in his hearing aids so I wasn’t sure if they would have anything for him but I was going to take my chances. Evan did wonderful the entire time and I was quite proud of him. He listened to me read him books (without his aids) and even repeated what I was saying without reading my lips while we waiting on the loaner aids to get programmed. I was again quite proud!! He did an excellent job leaving the silicon/ear mold stuff in his ears while it hardened - he really hates it!! Again another proud moment for mom.. Then came the time for the loaner aids.. They are beige (boring compared to his but whatever) and the audi was explaining to me and him how to turn them off and on. They have O for Off, M for Microphone (on) and T for Telephone. She was showing Evan everything and telling him to make sure and not play w/them but how to turn them off and on. Him and I got everything and he got his sticker at the end of the visit and we decided to go ahead and come back to the office when the aids/ear molds come in and let them do the work (I usually have them sent to the house and I cut the tubing and such) and as we were setting up the appointment Evan looked at the audi and starting talking about the T switch on the aid. She again explained to him that is for the Telephone and if he puts it on that he will not be able to hear unless he is on the telephone and without missing a beat he said: “So do I have a telephone number then?” Audi and I had a good laugh and again explained the T button to him to which I am still not sure if he understands!! Never a dull moment.. I love it and wouldn’t have it any other way..

I took Lissy to Hear And Say for her regular MAP and assessment just recently and I also aimed to discuss the pouches with the Audiologists.
Since they learned of Lissys new way of wearing the processor I had received mixed feelings and comments about the idea. They were unsure if it was a good idea to place the BTE elsewhere.
I can understand their apprehension. As audiologists, logic tells them that the BTE is designed to be worn behind the ear, otherwise it would be called an OTS-on the shoulder.
So this trip was my chance to convince them why we are doing this and show them how they look and work.
Emma, the centres clinical director, was the first to see the pouches and the processor sitting on Lissys shoulder. She liked the pouches and said the most important thing is that Lissy is receiving hearing. If wearing it in a pouch is working then go for it, as long as the microphone is not covered and the processor is sitting as high up on the shoulder to receive optimum sound through the mic.
The audiologists were given one of each bodyworn and shoulder worn pouch to display or show to those who are interested in purchasing them.
Although they are supporting me with this decision, they still believe that this is not a solution for everybody. It is an option.
Lissy has a very active lifestyle and this works in keeping the coil where it belongs. It is also a great option for little children with soft ears where the processor won’t stay, and for anyone else who would like to give it a go or thinks it may be of benifit to them or their child.
